A star is as far as the eye can see
and as near as my eye is to me
by Emily Jacir
Darat al Funun presents an extensive survey of select work from Emily Jacir’s oeuvre, including film and video works, installations, interventions, audio works, and sculpture. From Change/Exchange (1998) to Untitled (SOLIDARIDAD) (2013), the exhibition contains key works presented together for the first time, as well as several rarely seen works. This includes two site-specific works that have not been shown since they were created in 1999, Everywhere/Nowhere, and from Amman to Bethlehem (contraband).

May - October

Caravans by Nida Sinnokrot "...Camels, like sheep, were once revered as a store of wealth, a divine gift. A caravan of camels made even the most inhospitable of climates negotiable by offering shelter and security. In Palestine such caravans are a thing of the past. The nomadic Negev Bedouin are all but extinct, forced into prefabricated urban dwellings. Caravans today are little more than the name we give to shipping containers whose circulation ends permanently as settlements and offices in the West Bank construction sites." - Artist statement

May - October

Hiwar | Conversations in Amman is an exhibition, residencies, and talks program organized by Darat al Funun and curated by Adriano Pedrosa to celebrate 25 years of support for the arts. HIWAR (meaning conversation in Arabic) has brought 14 artists from the Arab world, Africa, Asia, and Latin America to Amman for residencies in September and October 2013, culminating in an exhibition opening on Saturday 9 November 2013. HIWAR was born out of the necessity to promote exchanges between artists from the margins, not solely by juxtaposing their works in an exhibition or publication format, but also by giving them the possibility to learn from each other's practices and experiences.

June - November

Portals by Sahel al Hiyari In Portals, Sahel al Hiyari presents three site-specific sculptural installations in the interconnecting spaces of Darat al Funun's Main Building, taking a new direction in his work. Using the language of form, texture, and line, and with a minimal number of simple materials, he subtly transforms each of the rooms. The installations question familiar boundaries, affect the senses, and provide a psychological effect "in order to access and cross the portals embedded within the human psyche".

June - November

Selected Works by Samah Hijjawi The exhibition in The Lab is loosely centered on a new multimedia work Chicken Scribbles and the Pigeon that Looks like a Frog (2010-ongoing) in which she investigates the political influences on aesthetics in the Arab world from the 1960s to the 1980s, both from a broader art historical perspective and a personal angle.
